Yamuna Breaches Danger Level in Delhi as North India Endures Widespread Flooding

The Centre has dispatched an inter-ministerial team to survey flood damage in Jammu over four days.

Overview

  • Fresh IMD red alerts cover swathes of the north, with warnings for flash floods, landslides and waterlogging across J&K, Himachal, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and more.
  • Multiple rivers in Jammu & Kashmir, including the Chenab and Tawi, are at or above flood marks as landslides shut the SrinagarJammu highway and the Vaishno Devi Yatra remains suspended for a ninth day.
  • Punjab reports its worst deluge since 1988 with 37 deaths, damage to crops on 1.75 lakh hectares across 23 districts, more than 3.55 lakh people affected and all educational institutions shut till September 7.
  • The Army’s Western Command says over 5,500 civilians have been rescued, more than 3,000 treated and 27 tonnes of supplies delivered under ongoing relief operations.
  • In Delhi, the Yamuna held above 207 metres, prompting fresh evacuations, closure of the Old Railway Bridge, suspension of cremations at flooded Nigambodh Ghat and severe traffic disruption after a flyover cave-in on NH-44.
