Yamaha’s V4 YZR-M1 Makes Race-Weekend Debut at Misano

Early laps point to stronger rear grip, lingering reliability questions, a top‑speed deficit.

Overview

  • Test rider Augusto Fernandez recorded competitive times in Friday practice, including a 1:31.678 in P2 that placed him close to Yamaha’s race riders after his first true time-attack on the prototype.
  • The opening day included a sensor-related safety shutdown in FP1 and a low-speed Turn 2 crash in P2, with no reported engine damage as the team continued setup work.
  • Speed-trap figures showed the V4 down roughly 9–10 km/h to the fastest bikes and 3–5 km/h to Yamaha’s inline-four, underscoring work still needed on top-end performance.
  • Despite Yamaha’s concession status, factory riders cannot race the V4 in 2025 due to pre-declared gearbox ratios and used aero fairing homologations, though they will test it in Monday’s Misano session.
  • Yamaha is planning additional wildcards in Sepang and possibly Valencia to gather data in hotter conditions before deciding its 2026 package, with Fernandez retained as lead tester through 2027.
