Yamaha Enters Fernandez for Sepang Wildcard to Advance V4 Evaluation

Yamaha seeks race-heat data to guide its 2026 engine choice.

Overview

  • Test rider Augusto Fernandez will race the V4-powered M1 as a wildcard at this weekend’s Malaysian Grand Prix under the Yamaha Factory Racing Team test banner.
  • The Sepang outing focuses on validating the prototype in extreme heat and gathering race-mileage data after its Misano debut produced 14th place and limited top speed.
  • Yamaha has scheduled a private Motorland Aragon test on November 9–10 followed by the official Valencia test on November 18, where race riders are due to sample the latest spec.
  • Fernandez and the V4 are also planned to run at the Valencia season finale as part of the evaluation roadmap toward 2026.
  • Yamaha says it has not committed to replacing the inline-four, as Fabio Quartararo publicly presses for a “winning bike” and the marque sits last in the manufacturers’ standings with one Sunday podium in 2025.
