Xunta Uses Right of First Refusal to Secure Six Orol Coins for €178,200

One additional piece was pre-empted by Spain's Culture Ministry for the National Archaeological Museum.

Overview

  • The Diario Oficial de Galicia published the resolution confirming the regional government's pre-emption of six lots from the Jesús Vico auction of the Orol collection.
  • The acquisitions comprise three Suevic tremisses (€16,200; €12,600; €63,000), a Visigothic tremissis from the Tui mint (€32,400), a half excelente of the Catholic Monarchs (€28,800) and a half real of Philip II (€25,200).
  • The Culture Ministry exercised the same right over a quarter excelente from the A Coruña mint, which will go to the National Archaeological Museum.
  • The protection process began in June 2025 when the coins were moved to Bien de Interés Cultural status before the auction, with the Xunta later notifying its intent to pre-empt and now committing the adjudicated total.
  • Among the pieces is the unique Tremissis Suevo series Latina Mvnita, whose inscription is cited by some scholars as a possible early reference to Galicia, and which has documented provenance including a 1993 Sotheby’s sale.
