Overview

  • From July 1, the Xunta de Galicia will manage planning and regulation over Galicia’s coastline spanning 1.6 million hectares in 86 municipalities.
  • The transfer follows a Constitutional Court decision and represents the region’s first significant autonomy boost in 17 years.
  • An interdepartmental commission has been set up to coordinate governance across departments including environment, tourism and culture.
  • In September, the Xunta will convene all affected municipalities in a summit to design the Pacto gallego por el litoral and establish shared management rules.
  • The framework aims to set Galicia as a European benchmark through projects like a continuous coastal trail, heritage site restorations and sustainable tourism in areas home to 58% of the region’s population.
