Xunta Demands Olive Tree Authorization While Vigo Council Accuses It of Halting Tunnel Funding

The regional government says Vigo has not formally submitted construction plans or an environmental report required to trigger its committed €18 million investment.

Overview

  • On August 5–6, Xunta de Galicia pressed for the formal submission of the Elduayen tunnel project and a pending environmental report on a protected olive tree before releasing its €18 million funding.
  • Vigo’s Concello insists it already sent the 'solicitud-informe' on the Catalog of singular trees–protected olive tree and is still awaiting any official response on both permits and financing.
  • Ana Ortiz, the Xunta’s territorial delegate in Vigo, accused Mayor Abel Caballero’s administration of misleading residents by failing to obtain the necessary authorizations for work affecting the centenary tree.
  • Carlos López Font, the municipal spokesperson, countered that the regional government has effectively paralyzed the tunnel extension since 2022 and has not issued any formal communication on its investment.
  • After heritage approval on July 30 conditioned on archaeological safeguards and detailed designs, this latest exchange of mutual accusations has kept the long-planned tunnel link intended to ease Vigo’s traffic congestion at a standstill.
