X’s Account Location Labels Unmask Foreign-Run Political Accounts

Users’ sleuthing turned the labels into a provenance check that exposed inauthentic networks despite known limits of IP-based attribution.

Overview

  • X launched an About This Account panel that shows the country or region an account appears to be based in, along with join date and username‑change history, using IP‑derived signals that users cannot edit.
  • Within hours, many high‑reach profiles promoting pro‑Trump themes were shown as operating from Eastern Europe, Nigeria, Bangladesh, Thailand and Turkey, with additional revelations involving Gaza‑related and Scottish independence accounts.
  • X acknowledged accuracy issues for some older accounts, temporarily removed or limited the location display, and said updates would restore the feature by Tuesday with improved accuracy and periodic data refreshes.
  • The company cautioned that travel and VPNs can affect the indicator, added a privacy option to show a broader region for users in repressive states, and said verified government accounts were exempt from showing a location.
  • Following user scrutiny, several large accounts were suspended or self‑deleted, while researchers highlighted coordinated influence and engagement‑grift networks and warned that IP‑based provenance has important limitations.
