X’s Account Location Labels Put Partisan Profiles Under Scrutiny

Users are flagging partisan accounts that display foreign locations, with X cautioning that the readout may be inaccurate.

Overview

  • X rolled out an “About This Account” field on Nov. 22 that shows the country or region tied to a profile, accessible by tapping the signup date.
  • Users and reporters found numerous pro‑Trump and nationalist accounts presenting as domestic but labeled in countries such as Nigeria, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Morocco, Senegal, Thailand and parts of Eastern Europe.
  • Nikita Bier, X’s product lead, acknowledged inaccuracies—especially for older accounts—and said a fix is imminent, noting VPNs, travel and app‑store origin can distort the displayed location.
  • X added a privacy option to show only a region for users in places where speech is punished and exempted government or certified institutional accounts from the feature.
  • Several high‑followed accounts vanished without explanation after the rollout, including an Ivanka Trump fan account labeled in Nigeria, while researchers warned reduced data access limits independent verification of foreign influence.
