XRP Ledger Developers Propose Zero-Balance Wallet Creation

Shifting the mandatory 1 XRP reserve to a sponsoring account would let apps offer deposit-free embedded wallets with users keeping sole control of their private keys.

Overview

  • Developers filed a pull request on Oct. 15 to add a SponsoredAccountCreate transaction that would let an existing account create a new wallet with a zero XRP balance by having the sponsor pay the required reserve.
  • Under the design a sponsor would cover the mandatory 1 XRP reserve and could optionally pay transaction fees while the wallet owner retains sole control of the private keys.
  • As of Oct. 28 the pull request remains open with two unresolved automated code-review findings, and the feature depends on a separate Sponsored Fees and Reserves amendment that has only about 10 to 11 of 35 validator votes versus the 29 votes needed for activation.
  • Market moves such as Ripple’s Privy partnership for embedded wallets, recent shifts in RLUSD stablecoin activity, and custody and settlement work by Robinhood, Bitstamp and BNY have boosted practical demand for deposit-free wallets.
  • If adopted the change could stop businesses from locking 1 XRP per new account and speed stablecoin onboarding, but sponsors would carry financial exposure and the network must complete code review and win broad validator approval before anything ships.
