Xcel Backs Off Planned Power Shutoffs as Red Flag Conditions Hit Denver Area

Updated forecasts led the utility to forgo a planned shutoff.

Overview

  • Xcel Energy said Sunday evening it would not implement a Public Safety Power Shutoff that had been under consideration for parts of Adams, Boulder, Jefferson and eastern Denver counties.
  • The National Weather Service has a Red Flag Warning in effect Monday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. for much of the Denver metro and nearby counties due to very low humidity and strong winds.
  • Forecasters expect winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to about 50 mph and relative humidity near 15%, creating conditions favorable for rapid fire spread.
  • Enhanced Powerline Safety Settings are active across northern Colorado, increasing line sensitivity to cut power when faults are detected and potentially lengthening outage durations while crews complete safety patrols.
  • Xcel advised customers to prepare for possible unplanned outages, urging those who rely on electrically powered medical equipment to have backup plans as crews stand by to restore service when conditions allow.
