Overview
- Xbox has been internally testing a Disc2Digital (also reported as Positron) system since May 2026 after references to an “enable Disc2Digital” flag appeared in Xbox PC app code.
- Under the reported workflow a player inserts a compatible disc, installs and launches the game while signed into a Microsoft account, and Xbox grants a digital entitlement that behaves like a digital purchase.
- The digital entitlement is linked to the specific physical disc so that the license transfers with the disc if it is lent, sold, or played on another account, while the disc itself continues to function.
- The program is said to work for Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S discs only, excludes original Xbox and Xbox 360 discs, and Microsoft has warned some Xbox One discs may lack the manufacturing data needed to qualify.
- Microsoft has not announced the feature publicly or decided whether next‑generation Project Helix will include a disc drive, and the reported effort is pitched as a way to ease owners into a likely disc‑free future while keeping access to existing libraries.
