Xbox Reintroduces Targeted Console Exclusives

CEO Asha Sharma presents a selective return to exclusives as a tool to restore platform differentiation.

Overview

  • Xbox announced that Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution will be permanent console exclusives for Xbox and PC and will not launch on PlayStation, a change revealed at the Xbox Games Showcase on Sunday.
  • Chief Content Officer Matt Booty said future exclusivity will be decided case-by-case and that Xbox will disclose platforms when it announces release dates while keeping big multiplayer and live-service games multiplatform.
  • Chief Strategy Officer Matthew Ball described the two exclusives as the start of a program and promised a ‘‘reliable pipeline’’ of Xbox-only titles guided by an internal framework for decisions.
  • Reporting says a PS5 port of Gears of War: E-Day was largely complete before the late decision to keep it exclusive, a move analysts call cautious and partly aimed at reassuring core Xbox players but one that created confusion for fans and some retailers.
  • The shift follows CEO Sharma’s business reset as Xbox balances platform differentiation with the revenue needs of being a large publisher and will likely test the exclusives strategy with E-Day’s performance and future rollout decisions.
