Xana Kernodle’s Mother Says She Forgives Bryan Kohberger After Jail and Renewed Faith

She says months behind bars led to a decision to release her anger.

Overview

  • At a Sept. 6 faith event in Coeur d’Alene, Cara Northington said, “I don’t hate Bryan Kohberger,” and described choosing to forgive her daughter’s killer.
  • Northington said a 10-month jail stint for a probation violation after the murders led to sobriety and Bible study, which she credits for her change in outlook.
  • She added that she will no longer give Kohberger space in her thoughts and remembered Xana as a “beautiful soul” who made people feel special.
  • In July 2025, Kohberger confessed in writing and received four consecutive life sentences without parole, avoiding the death penalty; he is held at Idaho’s maximum-security prison.
  • Prosecutors say the motive and any connection to the victims remain unknown, and records note Kernodle suffered more than 50 largely defensive stab wounds.
