X, formerly known as Twitter, briefly reintroduced headlines to link previews on Tuesday, only to remove them again hours later. The change was only visible on the web version of the platform, not on the iOS app.
Elon Musk, owner of X, had previously removed headlines from URL preview cards in October for aesthetic reasons, causing backlash from users and publications who had to adapt their posting strategies.
In November, Musk promised that headlines would return in an 'upcoming release', but did not specify a timeline. The brief return of headlines did not match Musk's description, as they were displayed at the bottom of the link preview, not the top.
The removal of headlines from X has been part of a series of controversial changes under Musk's ownership, including a significant decrease in advertising revenue and the loss of major advertisers due to concerns about content moderation practices.
Despite the backlash and financial losses, Musk has continued to make changes to the platform, including obtaining three new money transmitter licenses and expressing his intention for X to become a 'payments super app' by the end of the year.
