XReplaces DMs With 'Chat' on iOS and Web, Adding E2EE, Calls and Screenshot Controls

The rollout adds end-to-end encryption but keeps metadata visible and offers no safeguard against man-in-the-middle attacks.

Overview

  • The service is live on iOS and the web with Android promised soon, replacing legacy direct messages and unifying old and new chats in one inbox.
  • Chat introduces voice and video calling, file sharing, message editing and deletion, disappearing messages, and options to block or get alerts on screenshots.
  • Encryption now covers one-to-one and group conversations as well as shared media and files, expanding beyond earlier limited tests.
  • X says tools to verify chat authenticity and device identity are in development, and a voice memo feature is planned.
  • Early details indicate a required four-digit PIN to access Chat and reports suggest some capabilities could be restricted to paying subscribers.
