Overview

  • Twitter, now known as X, has removed the feature allowing paid subscribers to use NFTs as their profile pictures.
  • The feature, launched in 2022, was seen as a validation of NFTs and allowed users to display their digital assets in a unique hexagonal shape.
  • Despite the removal, users who had an NFT set as their profile picture still have hexagonal avatars, and it's unclear if these will be removed.
  • The move follows similar decisions by other social media platforms, including Meta, which wound down its NFT experiments in 2023.
  • The removal of the feature comes amidst other significant events on the platform, including a security breach of the SEC's official Twitter account.
