XLaunches Chat, Replacing DMs With Encrypted Messaging and Calls

The release advances Elon Musk’s push to make X a full-service communications platform.

Overview

  • The rollout is live on iOS and the web, with Android builds in final testing for an imminent release.
  • Chat adds end-to-end encryption for messages, groups and media, plus voice and video calling, file sharing, message editing and deletion, disappearing messages, and screenshot controls.
  • Legacy direct messages are migrated into a unified inbox so users retain their previous conversations.
  • X’s help center discloses that message metadata is not encrypted and the system currently lacks protection against man-in-the-middle attacks.
  • Activation uses a four-digit PIN to encrypt private keys, a choice flagged by researchers as weak, and X says verification tools and voice memos are in development.
