X Factor’s Chico Convicted of Drink-Driving, Banned for 12 Months

The ruling signals zero tolerance for driving over the limit despite grief or medication.

Overview

  • Yousseph “Chico” Slimani, convicted Thursday at Willesden Magistrates’ Court, received a 12-month driving ban and financial penalties.
  • Police said a breath test in Southgate on December 13 recorded 40 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath, above the legal limit of 35.
  • He told the court he drank Famous Grouse whisky from about 1am to 7am after a close friend’s death, then took Nyquil around 5.30pm before being stopped at about 6.30pm, and said he is usually teetotal.
  • Toxicologist Sarah Morley said Nyquil would add roughly 2mg per 100ml to a breath reading and noted she could not verify his reported consumption, while Pc Yuksel testified he smelled alcohol and observed a marked change in Slimani’s demeanour when asked about drinking.
  • District Judge Mark Jabbitt imposed a £600 fine, a £240 surcharge and £620 in costs, offered a rehabilitation course that could cut the ban by a quarter, and heard Slimani say the case has damaged his work and reputation during a period of heavy debt.
