X Criticized for Failing to Remove Hate Speech Amid Israel-Gaza Conflict

Despite Criticism, X Claims to Have 'Actioned' Over 325,000 Violating Posts

  • X, formerly known as Twitter, has been criticized for failing to remove hate speech related to the Israel-Gaza conflict, with 98% of flagged posts remaining up a week after being reported, according to a report by the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH).
  • Of the 200 posts identified by CCDH as breaching X's rules, 196 were still up a week later, and of the 101 accounts that made the posts, only one was suspended and two had been locked.
  • X has responded to the criticism, claiming it has 'actioned' more than 325,000 pieces of content that violated its terms of service in response to the Israel-Hamas conflict, and removed more than 3,000 accounts.
  • X's handling of hate speech has led to an advertising exodus and threats of penalties under the Digital Services Act from European Union officials.
  • Despite the criticism, X claims to have taken proactive measures against antisemitic content and has an 'escalations team' that has actioned more than 25,000 pieces of content under the company’s synthetic and manipulated media policy.
