Wythe Diner Relocated From Williamsburg to Steiner Studios for Permanent Set

The 1968 stainless-steel eatery was saved from demolition through a last-minute intervention by studio chairman Doug Steiner.

Overview

  • On Dec. 8, crews lifted the roughly 50-ton railcar structure by crane and moved it by flatbed to the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
  • Steiner Studios will install the diner as a permanent production set at its waterfront complex.
  • The relocation follows the $12.5 million sale of the 225 Wythe Ave. lot, which is slated for a mixed-use project with retail and about 28 apartments.
  • The diner opened in 1968 and later operated as Relish and Cafe de la Esquina, then hosted pop-ups including one for Chanel.
  • Former operator Sandy Stillman welcomed the preservation, and Doug Steiner described the spot as a neighborhood touchstone before major gentrification.
