WWII Navy Pilot Missing Since 1945 Laid to Rest in Michigan After DNA Identification

Forensic work by DPAA with military labs matched exhumed remains to Ensign Eugene E. Mandeberg.

Overview

  • Mandeberg was buried on Sept. 14, 2025 at Beth El Memorial Park in Livonia, Michigan following a family briefing on his identification.
  • DPAA accounted for his remains on March 4, 2025 using dental and anthropological analysis, with AFMES conducting mitochondrial and nuclear SNP DNA testing and mitochondrial genome sequencing.
  • He went missing on Aug. 15, 1945 after an aerial engagement near Atsugi Airfield on V-J Day, when four of six aircraft in his formation failed to return to USS Yorktown.
  • U.S. personnel recovered fragmentary remains in 1946 from Myoho-ji Temple in Yokohama, cataloged them as X-341 Yokohama #1, and interred them as an Unknown at the Manila American Cemetery, where ABMC maintained the grave for decades.
  • DPAA exhumed X-341 on Nov. 15, 2019 for analysis, and records note Mandeberg was 23 and had worked as a reporter for The Michigan Daily and the Associated Press before his service.
