WWII Marine’s Identified Remains Return to Minnesota

Using family DNA, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency identified long-unmatched remains and arranged their return so the veteran can be buried at home.

Overview

  • The remains of Pvt. Ernest LaVerne Lund arrived in Minneapolis for repatriation under escort by the Patriot Guard and were moved to local funeral home care.
  • The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency announced the identification earlier this year after disinterring a grave of unknown service members and matching remains to family DNA.
  • Kayakers first found remains in Pearl Harbor in 1985, and the DPAA linked those remains to Lund using modern DNA methods that compare recovered material with living relatives.
  • Lund was killed in the West Loch Disaster at Pearl Harbor in May 1944 when an ammunition ship explosion set off a chain reaction that killed many service members.
  • The family will hold a public visitation at Swedberg-Taylor Funeral Home in Webster followed by a funeral at Markville Cemetery this weekend, giving relatives and the community closure and formal military recognition.
