Overview
- A 250-kilogram British aerial bomb was discovered about two meters deep on farmland near Neuwittenbek in the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district.
- Residents of the Altwittenbek district were evacuated under a safety perimeter after authorities warned of a possible minor shockwave and audible bang.
- The Nord-Ostsee-Kanal and the Kiel–Flensburg rail line were closed during the operation and have now been reopened.
- Authorities initially aimed to defuse the device, then opted for a controlled detonation after a first attempt failed to initiate before a second attempt succeeded in the evening.
- Police reported the bomb had a defective, already detonated tail fuse and an intact front membrane fuse, and displaced residents have been allowed to return home.
