Wu Opens 50-Point Lead in New Emerson Poll as Boston Nears Mayoral Preliminary

Early voting is underway to narrow the four-candidate field to two finalists on Tuesday.

Overview

  • Emerson College’s survey of 555 likely voters conducted Tuesday and Wednesday shows Michelle Wu at 72% to Josh Kraft’s 22%, with a ±4 point credibility interval.
  • The poll reports favorability at roughly 73% for Wu and 26% for Kraft, with only a small share of voters undecided.
  • Emerson’s polling director says Wu’s advantage has expanded by about 29 points since February, citing her March defense of Boston’s immigration policies at a GOP-led hearing as a factor.
  • Campaign finance filings show Kraft has outspent Wu about $5.5 million to $1.1 million, largely through more than $5 million in loans, while Wu holds a cash-on-hand edge of $2.4 million to $1.3 million.
  • The Sept. 9 preliminary is already drawing ballots — more than 25,000 were cast earlier this week — and the ballot also includes Robert Cappucci and Domingos DaRosa as the poll finds 77% oppose deploying the National Guard to Boston.
