WRU Denounces Push for Extraordinary Meeting as 'Irresponsible Nuclear Option'

Union leaders warn an EGM would jeopardise a £28m investment, urging clubs to use existing governance channels.

Overview

  • Central Glamorgan has circulated a letter seeking the 10% club support required to force an EGM with motions including no-confidence votes and changes to board and council elections.
  • The proposed motions target WRU chair Richard Collier-Keywood and Professional Rugby Board chair Malcolm Wall, alongside calls for new board elections and an altered council electoral process.
  • In a joint statement, president Terry Cobner, chair Collier-Keywood and chief executive Abi Tierney called the EGM bid short-sighted and said it would cause significant damage to Welsh rugby.
  • The WRU says an EGM could delay or derail £28 million earmarked for pathways, academies, coaching, talent identification, performance insights and the Super Rygbi Cymru project, with wider commercial and competitive knock-on effects.
  • WRU rules require an EGM within 21 days if the threshold is met and a quorum of at least 93 clubs to validate any decisions, with no confirmation yet that the trigger has been reached.
