Wrong-Way Crashes on I-57 and I-355 Leave One Dead as Police Seek Fleeing Driver

Investigators report lanes reopened after the early-morning responses, with the I-57 motorist still at large.

Overview

  • Illinois State Police say a red Hyundai drove north in the southbound lanes of I-57 around 1:04 a.m., striking a white Dodge Durango near 147th Street before hitting an Amtrak Police squad car at 111th Street.
  • The Hyundai driver ran from the scene on foot, no injuries were reported in either I-57 crash, and lanes reopened by about 5 a.m.
  • In a separate incident early Sunday, troopers responded to I-355 at the Des Plaines River in Lemont after a vehicle traveling north in southbound lanes collided head-on around 1:30 a.m.
  • The wrong-way driver on I-355 died at the scene, and the other motorist was transported to a hospital in serious condition after multi-hour lane closures.
  • State police are investigating both incidents, and no one is in custody in the I-57 case.
