Wrong-Way Crash on Rhode Island’s Route 146 Kills Three; Victims Identified

  • Rhode Island State Police say 911 calls around 12:30 a.m. reported a vehicle traveling south on Route 99 north shortly before the crash in Lincoln on Route 146 north.
  • Investigators determined a Ford pickup driven by Denis Aguilar Campos, 41, of Chelsea, Massachusetts, was going the wrong way in the northbound high-speed lane.
  • The pickup struck a northbound Chevrolet Tahoe head-on and both vehicles were engulfed in flames when troopers arrived.
  • The deceased were identified as Campos, Tahoe driver Jaylin Rainford, 20, of Randolph, Massachusetts, and passenger Chiemelie Okonkwo, 20, of Lawrenceville, Georgia.
  • Route 146 north was closed for about four hours during the response and initial investigation, which remains ongoing.
