Wreckage of Missing Training Flight Found in Budawang National Park

Steep terrain with poor weather is blocking access for police, leaving the pilot’s condition unconfirmed.

Overview

  • An NSW Ambulance helicopter located the crash site just before 5pm Thursday following a search coordinated with the Australian Maritime Safety Authority.
  • NSW Police have taken control of the operation, with emergency crews attempting to reach the site on foot due to inaccessible terrain for vehicles and aircraft.
  • The aircraft departed Bankstown about 11am on a training route reported by Nine News, flew south into Victoria then north, and disappeared from radar around 2:50pm ahead of a planned 3:30pm return.
  • The pilot, described as a man in his 60s, was reported to have transmitted a distress signal while over Budawang National Park between Batemans Bay and Canberra.
  • The Australian Transport Safety Bureau said it is gathering information as part of an active investigation.
