Wounded York County Deputy Leaves Rehab With Police Escort After Sept. 17 Ambush

Officials link the September attack to a domestic-violence case involving the suspect’s ex-girlfriend.

Overview

  • Lt. David Godfrey was discharged Thursday from WellSpan Surgery and Rehabilitation Hospital in York and received a police escort home following a news conference.
  • Godfrey was critically wounded during a Sept. 17 warrant service at a Haar Road farmhouse in North Codorus Township where three Northern York County Regional Police detectives were killed.
  • Authorities identified the shooter as Matthew J. Ruth, who was fatally shot after opening fire with an AR-15-style rifle equipped with a suppressor when detectives opened the front door at 2:08 p.m.
  • District Attorney Tim Barker cited domestic violence as the motive, noting Ruth’s ex-girlfriend lived at the farm and a trail camera the night before captured him in camouflage with binoculars and a rifle.
  • Investigators said a fourth NYCRPD detective was also critically injured and rushed with Godfrey to WellSpan York Hospital, and police later found the family’s Labrador shot to death in the home’s basement.
