From 160 sq ft to 500 sq ft: A new chapter for BDD Chawl residents

Overview

  • Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and deputy CMs handed over keys to 556 eligible families at Matunga, marking delivery of the D and E wings in Worli’s first rehabilitation tower.
  • Beneficiaries will occupy fully furnished 2BHK flats of about 500 sq ft free of cost after generations in 160 sq ft chawl accommodations.
  • Residents awaiting later phases are accommodated in transit housing or receive an advance rent allowance of ₹25,000 per month for up to 11 months.
  • Political leaders urged recipients to treat their flats as family assets and proposed a 10- to 12-year lock-in clause to discourage early resale in Mumbai’s high-value market.
  • Project partners including Tata Projects and Capacit’e Infraprojects are advancing construction across 86 acres with sustainable infrastructure, podium gardens and a dedicated chawl museum.
