World Population Surpasses 8 Billion, U.S. Growth Slows

International migration prevents U.S. population drop despite slowest growth rate in history.

The world population increased by 75 million in 2023, reaching over 8 billion people for the first time on New Year's Day 2024.
The global growth rate was just under 1%, with 4.3 births and two deaths expected worldwide every second at the start of 2024.
The U.S. population growth rate was 0.53%, about half the worldwide figure, adding 1.7 million people to reach a total of 335.8 million on New Year's Day 2024.
If the current pace continues, the 2020s could be the slowest-growing decade in U.S. history, with a growth rate of less than 4% over the 10-year-period from 2020 to 2030.
Despite a birth every nine seconds and a death every 9.5 seconds in the U.S., net international migration, adding one person every 28.3 seconds, will keep the population from dropping.
