World Diabetes Day 2025 Puts Workplace Diabetes in Focus as Italian Groups Press Policy Overhaul

Italian experts use the observance to push for coordinated governance to fix fragmented diabetes care.

Overview

  • The International Diabetes Federation set the 2025 theme as “Know more and do more for diabetes at work,” spotlighting practical support and anti-discrimination in workplaces.
  • More than 540 million people live with diabetes globally, over 430 million are of working age, and Italy counts about 4 million cases with roughly 80,000 deaths annually linked to complications.
  • In a Rome Senate forum, Italy’s parliamentary intergroup and FeSDI presented national priorities to align policy with the work-focused theme.
  • FeSDI, led by Prof. Raffaella Buzzetti, urged a permanent interministerial table and three pillars: including diabetology visits in the LEA, creating interoperable national data, and establishing a database of best practices.
  • Experts highlighted stigma faced by workers with diabetes and called for employer training, flexible scheduling, suitable spaces for glucose management, and use of free vaccines provided under the 2023–2025 National Vaccination Plan.
