World Cleanup Day Rallies Rio With Mutirões, New Botafogo Award and Season-Long Programs

New incentives plus extended activities seek to convert a single-day push into ongoing stewardship rooted in data.

  • Volunteer cleanups are taking place this morning across the capital and neighboring cities, with scheduled actions on beaches such as Botafogo, Leblon, Flamengo and Ilha do Fundão, plus sites in Niterói, Cabo Frio, Rio das Ostras and Saquarema.
  • In Botafogo, local groups Canoas Rio and Viver Botafogo with the movement Enseada Limpa lead a mutirão from 8 a.m. that adds sustainability talks featuring Comlurb and Águas do Rio.
  • Botafogo debuts the Mar de ideias award recognizing selected proposals for innovative local environmental solutions during the event.
  • The Leblon action, organized by Instituto Gas Petro, Equipe F3 and Projeto Arte de aMAR with support from Estácio and Instituto Yduqs, runs 8 a.m. to noon at Quiosque Boho.
  • Statewide efforts include Projeto Rio ao Mar’s season through early 2026 with workshops, a plastic recycling station and cultural programming, supported by data practices responding to research that 91% of beach litter is disposable plastic.
