Overview

  • World Boxing’s new 'Sex, Age and Weight' policy mandates PCR testing for all athletes over 18 to detect the SRY gene and verify chromosomal sex at birth
  • Boxers with Y chromosome markers or a difference of sexual development involving male androgenization must enter male divisions while those without such markers are cleared for female competition
  • Olympic welterweight champion Imane Khelif cannot compete at the Eindhoven Box Cup or any sanctioned event until she completes the required genetic screening
  • National federations are responsible for administering tests, submitting chromosomal certifications and face sanctions for false or missing results under the policy
  • The policy establishes an appeals process for athletes to dispute their certification; it precedes World Boxing’s governance of boxing at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics
