World Bank Approves $680 Million for Assam Roads, Education and Governance
The decision advances three projects into implementation with 16-year financing to cut travel times, lift learning outcomes and modernize public services.
Overview
- World Bank directors cleared $680 million across three initiatives: $350 million for disaster-resilient hill roads, $250 million for school education and adolescent wellbeing, and $80 million for governance and service delivery.
- The roads project will build climate-resilient links in hilly and remote areas and targets faster travel for nearly 190,000 people in tribal and rural communities.
- Connectivity upgrades include transport and logistics hubs outfitted with truck, container, taxi and bus bays as well as electric vehicle charging points.
- The education project will support learning for over two million primary pupils and workforce readiness for about two million adolescents through life-skills training, curriculum updates, multilingual classes and climate-resilient school facilities.
- The governance program will strengthen public financial management, streamline services for citizens and businesses, and enhance data systems, with projects now moving to procurement and rollout in Assam.
