Overview

  • The World Bank’s Board of Executive Directors approved the $150 million IBRD loan on June 23 to improve access to quality jobs for 1.6 million women in Tamil Nadu.
  • More than 600,000 women will receive skills training and career support while around 18,000 women entrepreneurs gain incubation assistance to launch businesses.
  • Enabling services will be expanded to include safe hostels, crèche facilities, elderly care, safe transport options and hotline centres for reporting harassment.
  • State capacity and institutional frameworks will be bolstered through a common results framework, the rollout of the Tamil Nadu Women’s Policy and new regulatory measures to attract non-farm investments.
  • A state-level finance platform backed by private capital will promote loan guarantee funds and micro-grant schemes and the loan carries a 25-year maturity with a five-year grace period.
