World Bank Announces $40 Million Grant to Ukrenergo for Grid Stabilizers After Jan. 31 Outage

The targeted grant will finance STATCOM units to stabilize voltage, enabling higher power imports.

Overview

  • Following talks between Denys Shmyhal and World Bank operations director Anna Bjerde, the bank confirmed a $40 million URTF grant for Ukrenergo.
  • Funding will procure four STATCOM devices and related equipment to reinforce the transmission network and expand import capacity from Europe.
  • On Jan. 31 a systemic failure cut high-voltage links with Romania and Moldova and between western and central Ukraine, causing widespread outages including in Kyiv.
  • Electricity was restored nationwide by that evening, and officials report no confirmed external interference as early findings point to line icing and automatic shutdowns.
  • With temperatures forecast to drop to minus 30 C in some areas, Ukraine is accelerating repairs and received more than 38 tons of energy equipment from multiple European partners over the past week.
