World Aquatics Sets $4.6 Million Fund to Settle Swimmers’ Antitrust Case

The payout still needs court approval.

Overview

  • The fund will compensate 263 athletes who signed International Swimming League contracts for the planned 2018 Turin meet and the 2019 season.
  • Olympic champions Katinka Hosszú, Tom Shields and Michael Andrew filed the 2018 class action alleging the federation, then known as FINA, threatened eligibility bans and shut down ISL events.
  • A 2023 district court win for World Aquatics was overturned by the 9th Circuit in 2024, leading to renewed litigation and the settlement filing.
  • World Aquatics leadership said many swimmers were let down by the ISL situation, and prize-money policies have since expanded in federation events.
  • A separate ISL lawsuit against World Aquatics continues, with a jury trial scheduled for January 2026.
