Workington’s New Stadium Plan Approved by Cumberland Council

The planning decision releases extra regional funding, triggers in-house procurement and moves the project from planning into delivery

Overview

  • The planning committee granted full permission for phase one on Wednesday, May 27, clearing the way for demolition and construction procurement to start.
  • Cumberland Council’s executive authorised immediate procurement for demolition, enabling works and construction contracts after the planning decision.
  • The scheme secured an additional £4.5 million from the Cumbria Combined Authority on top of Towns Fund and Football Foundation backing to fund replacement terraces and increase capacity.
  • The project will be delivered and managed in-house by Cumberland Council and will provide community, hospitality and business spaces as well as a shared stadium for Workington AFC and Workington Town RLFC.
  • The build is planned in two phases — about 3,700 seats in phase one and another 1,300 in phase two for roughly 5,000 total — with council leaders aiming for the clubs to move in for the 2028/29 season pending procurement, construction and planning conditions.
