Workington’s New Cumberland Sports Village Enters Planning Phase

Public engagement events will inform a planning application due in late July ahead of anticipated construction in early 2026.

Overview

  • The proposed stadium at Borough Park will feature a 3G pitch, an initial 3,700-capacity expandable to 5,000, spectator stands, a sports bar, fan zone and executive boxes.
  • A planning application is due at the end of July, with contractor selection slated for September and council approval expected by December.
  • Community consultation events will be held soon to gather feedback on stadium designs and amenities.
  • The project is led by CSV Ltd with specialists FWP, Curtins, PSA, Baker Mallet, Wardell Armstrong and Savills, and funded by the UK Government Town Deal, Cumberland Council and the Football Foundation.
  • Demolition of the existing Borough Park is planned for January 2026, followed by construction through early 2026 to a target completion in July 2027.
