Worker Killed, Two Injured in Yarmouth Trench Collapse During Sewer Project

Federal safety officials are investigating the Revoli Construction site after past OSHA citations for trench hazards.

Overview

  • The collapse occurred around 8:50 a.m. at 152 S. Shore Drive in front of the Skipper Chowder House during ongoing sewer work.
  • Yarmouth firefighters and the Barnstable County technical rescue team spent hours shoring the trench with hydraulic jacks, boards, ladders, ropes and a ladder-truck bucket, aided by a drone.
  • One trapped worker was extricated conscious and flown by MedFlight to Rhode Island Hospital, while another was taken by ambulance after getting out with help.
  • A third worker was found dead in the trench, with the operation shifting to recovery and the body removed at 2:45 p.m., officials said.
  • An OSHA investigator was on scene as records show Revoli Construction previously paid fines for violations that included failing to protect employees from cave-ins.
