Woolton Hall Blaze Collapses Roof as Crews Scale Back After Night-Long Battle

An inquiry into the cause awaits safe access to the structurally compromised, Grade I‑listed hall long identified as at risk.

Overview

  • Fire broke out shortly after 8pm on August 19, with crews arriving within minutes to a fully involved blaze measuring roughly 40 by 30 metres.
  • Up to nine fire engines, an aerial platform and an MFRS drone were deployed, with operations kept external after a surveyor deemed interior entry unsafe.
  • The roof collapsed and the building was left unstable; the main body of the fire was out by about 2am, and by late morning two engines were damping down.
  • Roads around Speke Road remained closed under a cordon and nearby residents were advised to keep windows and doors shut due to smoke.
  • No serious injuries were reported, and Merseyside Police and the fire service plan a cause investigation when safe to enter the site, which had been on Historic England’s at‑risk register after a 2019 fire.
