Woodside, JSE and KEPCO Sign MoU for AustraliaJapan Liquid Hydrogen Supply Chain

The initiative remains at a planning stage pending technical studies, commercial agreements, regulatory approvals.

Overview

  • Liquid hydrogen from Woodside’s proposed H2Perth in Perth’s Rockingham and Kwinana industrial zones would be shipped to receiving terminals in Japan.
  • Production is planned via natural-gas reforming with carbon capture and storage to target net‑zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions at start‑up, with carbon credits used if required.
  • The parties aim to have a purpose‑built liquefied hydrogen carrier in operation by 2030 if the project advances, with the concept using hydrogen as its main fuel.
  • Contemplated roles include Woodside handling production and storage at loading and discharge ports, HD KSOE designing and building the vessel, and Hyundai Glovis plus MOL providing operational input on logistics, propulsion, storage and cargo handling.
  • The MoU formalizes collaboration toward an AustraliaJapan supply chain while key technical assessments, commercial arrangements and CCS feasibility remain to be resolved.
