Woodbridge Closes Route 440/Smith Street for At Least Three Months After 1,000-Foot Crack

Officials have opened a formal engineering investigation into the cause.

Overview

  • Route 440/Smith Street remains shut with police checkpoints and signed detours routing drivers via Florida Grove Road, New Brunswick Avenue, Crows Mill Road and Riverside Drive.
  • Eighteen families who were evacuated over the weekend have returned after engineers measured no recent movement and deemed nearby structures stable.
  • Police previously pointed to a nearby warehouse construction project as the cause, but the mayor says any attribution is speculative pending the review.
  • Mayor John McCormac met with engineers, utilities, law enforcement and Brookfield Properties, whose Raritan River Logistics Center said it is working with third-party engineers and local authorities.
  • Repairs will require rebuilding the road and sub-base and inspecting utilities, and officials now expect the work to take at least three months.
