Women’s Share on Dax and MDax Boards Slips in 2025, Ending Decade of Gains

The Russell Reynolds study points to women’s concentration in HR roles as a sign of persistent barriers to executive power.

Overview

  • In the Dax, women hold 25.5% of executive seats, down 0.2 percentage points from the previous year, according to the analysis.
  • The MDax fell 0.4 points to 19.5%, breaking a ten-year run of annual increases in female representation.
  • Board makeup is highly uneven, with Beiersdorf, Merck, MTU Aero Engines and Siemens Healthineers above 50% women, while Porsche SE and Brenntag have none.
  • Across nine European markets, only Germany and Sweden recorded declines, with Norway well above one‑third; the Dax ranks sixth and the MDax is next-to-last ahead of Italy.
  • Women’s average tenure on boards is shorter than men’s at 4.9 versus 7.9 years, and only four Dax companies are led by a woman, including Commerzbank’s Bettina Orlopp.
