Women’s Professional Baseball League Finalizes 100-Player Draft Pool After D.C. Tryouts

The Washington tryouts produced a 100-player draft pool, setting up team announcements next month.

Overview

  • The four-day showcase ended Aug. 25 with two seven-inning scrimmages at Nationals Park, where 98-year-old AAGPBL alum Maybelle Blair threw the first pitch to Mo’ne Davis.
  • Roughly 600 applicants from about 10 countries were narrowed to around 100 finalists who are now draft-eligible for the league’s first draft in October.
  • Notable players already signed or committed include Mo’ne Davis, USA Baseball’s Kelsie Whitmore, Japan’s Ayami Sato and Canada’s Alli Schroder.
  • The open tryouts welcomed softball converts and international talent, with scouting led by Team USA star Alex Hugo, a special adviser to the WPBL.
  • Organizers plan to unveil the six inaugural teams by late September, target a May 2026 launch, work with Fremantle on production and content, and continue pursuing a national broadcast deal; merchandise sales topped about $20,000 in 24 hours at the tryouts.
