Women Face Life-Threatening Situations as Abortion Services Cease in 16 States

Following the overturning of Roe v. Wade, women are being denied critical care, forced to carry nonviable pregnancies to term, and facing severe penalties for illegal abortions.

  • In the wake of the Supreme Court's overturning of Roe v. Wade in June 2022, at least 16 states have ceased nearly all abortion services, leading to a surge in dangerous life-threatening situations for women.
  • Many women have been turned away in medical emergencies for not being sick enough, had their health care delayed or denied due to state laws, and been told they have to continue their pregnancies despite devastating, fatal diagnoses for their babies.
  • In states with abortion bans, hospitals have created termination boards that need to approve any abortion care before it is provided to patients, sometimes leaving women waiting for many hours or days to get care they need.
  • The penalties for performing an illegal abortion vary depending upon the state, but can include loss of medical license, life in prison and up to $100,000 in fines.
  • Many women unable to access care in their own states have had to travel to other states for care, but this is often not an option due to the high costs involved.
