Woman Sues Chicago Over Police Theft of Buyback Glock

The suit seeks $50,000 in damages for officers’ alleged cover-up of the Glock’s disappearance after a buyback event

Overview

  • Twanda Willingham filed suit in Cook County on July 31 after being shot last August with a .45-caliber Glock 21 that she says was stolen from the Gresham District station following a Dec. 2, 2023 buyback at St. Sabina Church.
  • Her lawsuit alleges officers concealed the weapon’s disappearance by slipping its tag onto another firearm and falsely attributing the Glock to Officer Krystal Rivera in inventory records.
  • Ballistics tests linked the missing Glock to Willingham’s August 2024 shooting and at least two other shootings before police recovered it from a 16-year-old on Nov. 30, 2024.
  • The Chicago Police Department reopened its internal affairs investigation after media reports but has suspended the criminal probe, and no officers have been charged.
  • Sgt. Robert Brown is the only officer disciplined so far, receiving a one-day suspension, and Rivera’s June friendly-fire death has intensified scrutiny of departmental oversight.
