Woman Rescued After Night in Remote WA Cave Following 8-Metre Fall

Authorities credit inter-agency coordination, with traveller preparedness proving critical.

Overview

  • The 60-year-old fell about eight metres into a shaft at Empress Spring near Lake Wells on Friday afternoon.
  • Her partner raised the alarm around 5pm and lowered first aid supplies, water and camp chairs to support her overnight.
  • DFES, WA Police, St John WA and WA Country Health executed a vertical rescue using specialised rope equipment.
  • She was brought to the surface at about 5:35am Saturday and taken to Laverton Hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening.
  • WA Country Health said she was in a stable condition, noting telehealth-supported coordination for the remote site roughly 1,200–1,400 kilometres northeast of Perth.
