Woman Killed as Apartment Slab Collapses in Virar West

Authorities opened an accidental death investigation to determine if ageing structures undermined by heavy rainfall were to blame.

54-year-old woman dies in slab collapse incident in Virar

Overview

  • On May 30, a concrete slab collapsed inside Merchant Apartment in the MB Estate area of Virar West, killing 54-year-old resident Alfiya Abbas Manaswala.
  • Manaswala and her husband were sleeping in the living room when debris fell on her; she was rushed to Sanjeevani Hospital but succumbed to her injuries.
  • Police Sub-Inspector Raam Kundgir of Bolinj Police Station confirmed registration of an Accidental Death Report and an ongoing probe into the collapse.
  • This marks the third slab failure in the Vasai-Virar region within 11 days, following a May 21 collapse in Nalasopara and a May 26 incident in Gopcharpada that also caused casualties.
  • The Vasai-Virar City Municipal Corporation had earlier flagged several ageing buildings as dangerous, raising alarm over structural safety during recent heavy rains.
